Overflowing gutter?
Check underground too.

When water spills over a gutter, most people clean the gutter. Often it was not the gutter. A downpipe that cannot discharge because the stormwater line below it is blocked will back up and overflow at the top, no matter how clean the gutter is. The fix is at the other end of the system.

ROOF, GUTTER & DOWNPIPE PLUMBING IN IPSWICH

How we find the cause.

We assess the problem with the whole roof-water path in mind, from the gutter to the downpipe to the underground stormwater line it discharges into. Debris, damaged sections, failed joints and downstream restrictions all produce water where it should not be, and they need quite different work.

Roof access, height and roof condition decide how an inspection can safely be carried out, and work at height needs proper arrangements. Where the downpipe connects to underground stormwater, the fault may be below ground entirely, in which case a camera down the stormwater line answers the question faster than another look at the gutter.

What to send us

Photograph the problem from ground level, ideally while it is raining, because that shows exactly where the water goes. Note when it happens and where the overflow lands. Do not climb onto the roof or use a ladder you are not confident on: this is not the job to take a risk for.

What actually moves the price

Height, safe access, the length affected, the material and the connection to underground stormwater all influence the work. Have the assessment and the repair scoped together so you are not paying twice to get someone back up there.

WORTH KNOWING

Straight answers.
Awkward ones too.

Is an overflowing downpipe always blocked at the top?

No, and this is the most common misdiagnosis we see. A restricted stormwater line below ground makes water back up and overflow at the gutter. Clean gutters and a persistent overflow point underground.

Can I just send photos instead of getting on the roof?

Yes, please do. Ground-level photos during rain are genuinely useful and much safer. Leave close inspection and anything at height to people with the right equipment.

Could the real problem be underground?

Frequently. The visible overflow is rarely where the fault is. If the gutters are clear and it still overflows, the stormwater line is the next place to look.
