Where Booval’s
tap water comes from.
Booval is on the Urban Utilities drinking water network, supplied from Seqwater’s Mt Crosby treatment plants on the Brisbane River. The chain is the same for every connected home in the city: water released from Wivenhoe Dam travels down the Mid Brisbane River to Mt Crosby, where Seqwater’s East Bank and West Bank plants treat it, and Urban Utilities pumps it through its Ipswich reservoirs to your meter. Two things are added on purpose. The disinfectant is chloramine rather than plain chlorine, which holds a residual over the long mains out to Booval and is the reason a standard carbon jug does less than people expect. Fluoride is dosed to a target of 0.8 mg/L under Queensland law. Both matter to fish keepers, who need to neutralise the chloramine, and to anyone on home dialysis, who should talk to their unit about filtration.

How hard is the water in Booval?
Network water here is moderately hard: 80–115 mg/L as CaCO₃, against an aesthetic guideline of 200 mg/L, and it spiked to 250 mg/L in November 2024 after heavy rain washed minerals into the Mid Brisbane River. In practice that means scale on kettles, shower screens and, most expensively, on hot water elements and heat exchangers. The pH is going up
Seqwater is lifting the pH of water leaving Mt Crosby from about 7.8 to a target of 8.4 from mid-August 2026, to extend disinfection in warm months, raise alkalinity and reduce corrosion in the network. The change covers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and parts of the Scenic Rim. For Booval homes that is good news for copper pipes and brass fittings, which corrode less in slightly more alkaline water, and a small nudge towards scale in hot water systems. Fish keepers will want to re-check their tank water after the change.
What the pipes in Booval add
Most of Booval was plumbed before copper became standard, so galvanised steel water pipes are still in service under a lot of houses here. They corrode from the inside, which is where brown water first thing in the morning comes from, and old brass fittings and solder can add trace lead to water that has sat in the pipe overnight. The Australian Government’s health advice is simple and free: run the tap for about 30 seconds after it has been unused for several hours before you fill a kettle. Beyond that, the question is how much of a failing run to replace, and that is a plumbing conversation rather than a water one.
The 2021 Census counted 1,386 private dwellings in Booval, 63% of them separate houses and 36% townhouses or apartments, where the water service is shared and the body corporate owns the pipework up to your lot. About 52% of households rent, so for most homes a water problem goes to the property manager first, and we deal with them directly.
Bundamba Creek: where Booval’s water goes
The Bremer rises near Rosewood and Warrill Creek, runs through the centre of Ipswich and meets the Brisbane River at Barellan Point. Bundamba, Deebing, Ironpot, Western and Warrill creeks all drain into it. Most of the City of Ipswich sits in this catchment. Booval’s stormwater reaches Bundamba Creek.
Healthy Land & Water rated the Bremer River catchment “Poor” for environmental condition in the 2025 Report Card, with social and economic benefits rated very high. An independent Griffith University review published in February 2021 found the Bremer receives contaminants from four sewage treatment plants, a former coal mine, an abattoir and a power station, and that its water quality had not improved in 20 years. Low-lying parts of Booval were reached by the 2011 and 2022 floods, and Council’s historical flood mapping shows how far. Floodwater is untreated river and creek water carrying sewage, fuel and silt, and what it leaves in drains, gullies and rainwater tanks is the water quality problem that lasts. Where the wastewater goes
Booval is sewered. Wastewater goes to one of Urban Utilities’ four Ipswich treatment plants, at Bundamba, Goodna, Carole Park and Rosewood, and treated water is released to the rivers under Queensland environmental authorities.
